Character Concept

Define your character concept in a few words such as Fighter, Pilot, Road Warrior, Shaolin Monk, Thief etc.

Race

Choose a Racial Package. Your GM will tell you what is available for his game. Most Races will cost a Level Adjustment. They will have bonuses to attributes and special abilities. Large amounts of Cyberware are put together the same way as Racial packages. You may add them together but you have to pay for the Level Adjustments from both which can get expensive quickly.

Races - This is a list of Races.

Magic

If you want your character to have any magical powers you have to add it at this point. Each power costs an LA. Some powers may not be available in every game. Check with your GM. You get that Magic Power at Trained.

Magic - This is the Magic rules for Nexus. Choose a power.

Devices

You may want a character built around a special device, a ship, a mech, a magic sword, etc. Make sure to discuss this with your GM.

Attributes

You start with 9 points in Attributes. They can't start above +3 any particular attribute. You can lower an attribute down to -1 to increase your other attributes. Begin with any racial attributes if you pick a Race. If you have a bonus to an attribute from a Race then don't increase the attribute above 3 + racial bonus.

Traits - This is the mean of the various Traits on your character sheet.

Savings Throw Skills

Athletics +10 = Reflex Save

Perception +10 = Passive Perception

Resistance +10 = Fortitude Save

Willpower +10 = Will Save

You start with two of these at Trained and the other two at Basic. Circle the T after each of the skills you choose as Trained and Circle the B for Basic skills.

Everyman Skills

You get a certain set of everyman skills at Basic. You also get 4 additional basic skills. At any time you can also spend a Feat to gain a new basic skill. You can't spend two basic skills to get a trained skill.

Depending on the tech level you will also start with the following skills at basic:

Low Tech – Beastmastery, Melee, Survival

Moderate Tech – Ranged, Survival, Trade

High Tech – Academics, Drive, Software

Extreme Tech – Academics, Drive, Software

Trained Skills

Choose three more Trained Skills. So at this point you should have 5 Trained skills and 9 Basic skills.

Primary Skills

Choose three skills as your Primary Skills. These should be the focus of your character. They can be any of the skills including your Magic Power Skills. Put a 'P' beside your choices for Primary Skills. You can even choose a savings throw skill. These Primary Skills have a few differences with other skills.

  • You are more talented with these skills then other skills. You get a one time bonus of +2 added to your Rank + Attribute + Class Bonus.

  • You can upgrade your Primary Skills to Mastery at Class Level 10. All the others require that you are Class Level 20.

  • Unlike all other skills you can spend a Hero Point to reroll a botch on a Primary Skill.

  • You start with two free feats instead of one at trained.

You can spend +1 LA in order to get another Primary Skill.

Skills and Feats – This is the master list of skills with the feats for each one.

Feats

Each one of your Trained skills starts off with a Trained Feat in that skill for free. Plus you get 5 more Feats from any of your Trained skills. You can spend a Feat to get another Basic Skill.

Merits

You can spend Merit Points at this point. A Merit point will add an attributes point to your character. You can spend a Merit point to get another Feat. There is a list of other Merits.

Merits – This is the list of Merits and Flaws for your characters.

Hero and Social Points

You get one Hero Point per level. If you are leveling first before play you get a number of Hero points equal to the character level to start with. You get a number of social points equal to your class level.

Hero Points – This is the rules for Hero points.

Leveling

Every 4 class levels you take you get a +1 to an Attribute. Certain skills will also increase a certain attribute when you get them at focused or mastery. You get two feats every level which can go to any skill.

So each level you see Skill Upgrade you get to Upgrade a Skill from Basic to Trained, Trained to Focused, or Focused to Mastery. However you can't upgrade any skills to Mastery before you get to 10th Class level (not 10th character level including your Level Adjustments).

Training and Leveling – These are the rules for leveling your character

Feats

You will have a number of upgrades listed with each template. An upgrade is a skill at trained. Two upgrades makes a skill focused. Three makes it Mastery. Each upgrade gets one feat at that upgrade level – a trained feat at trained, etc. You must have 3 feats in a trained skill in order to go to focused but this includes the free one so you only have to spend 2 more trained feats for that skill. You have to have 4 focused feats in order to get mastery. So if you have a skill at Mastery then you will have to spend 3 at trained, 4 at focused and 1 at mastery for a total of 8 feats for one skill.

So:

(T) = 1 trained feat

(F) = 3 trained feats, 1 focused feat

(M) = 3 trained feats, 4 focused feats, 1 mastery feat

Traits

Reflex Save = Athletics + 10

Stunned (aka Flatfooted) = (Athletics)/2 + 10

Fortitude Save = Resistance + 10

Willpower Save = Willpower + 10

Block = Martial Arts + 10

Parry = Melee + 10

Class Bonus = ½ Class Level rounded down

Wound Scale (L/M/S/H)

Based on size and scale. Human wound scale is 5/10/15/20.

Toughness = Con + Resistance rank + ½ light wound level rounded down

Damage at or below this level is too small to cause a wound. It will bruise or bleed but not cause significant damage. Basically this is so that someone isn't paper cut to death.

Ego = Pre + Willpower Rank (ie Don't add Class Bonus to this) This is Will DR

Composure = Pre + Wit

This is your resistance Sanity Damage. If your Sanity damage is less then or equal to your composure then you don't have any effects. See Traits for Sanity Rules.
